How to Start a Pakistani Clothing Business Abroad (from Home, Instagram or a Boutique)

· 4 min read

Thinking of selling Pakistani clothes online in the UK, UAE, USA or Canada? A practical guide to starting a Pakistani clothing business abroad: choosing what to sell, finding stock, pricing, timing around Eid and weddings, and shipping.

Plenty of successful Pakistani boutiques abroad started on a dining table: a few suits bought on a trip home, photographed on a sister and posted on Instagram. Demand is real. Pakistani families in the UK, the Gulf, North America and Australia want lawn every summer, formals for every wedding and new outfits every Eid, and many would rather buy from someone local than wait for a brand's international delivery.

Here is how to turn that into a business that lasts more than one season.

1. Decide what you sell, and to whom

"Pakistani clothes" is too wide. The shops that grow pick a lane:

  • Lawn and everyday unstitched: high volume, lower price, big in spring and summer.
  • Ready-made pret: for customers without a tailor abroad; needs a good size range.
  • Formals and party wear: higher price and margin; peaks before Eid and in the wedding season.
  • Bridal and wedding guest outfits: made to order, the highest value, and the most care needed.
  • Modest wear, kids' wear or men's kurtas: smaller niches with loyal customers.

Look at what your first customers (friends, family, community) actually ask for. Start there.

2. Find reliable stock

You have three options: buy from brands (known names, retail prices), buy from wholesale markets and manufacturers in Pakistan (better margins, more risk), or design your own and have it stitched (the best margins, the most work). We explain each in our guide to Pakistani clothes wholesale suppliers.

Whatever you choose, have someone in Pakistan who can check the goods before they are packed. Most problems new sellers face (wrong colours, missing pieces, poor stitching) are found too late, when the box is opened abroad.

3. Get sizing right from day one

If you sell ready-made outfits, sizing will make or break your reviews. Pakistani sizes don't match UK or US sizes, and they vary between makers.

  • Publish your own size chart in inches and centimetres, with bust, waist, hips and length.
  • Have your stock stitched to that chart, so every design fits the same way.
  • Offer made-to-measure for special pieces. Customers will pay more for a formal that fits.

4. Price for the landed cost, not the purchase price

Work out what each piece costs delivered to your door: purchase price, stitching, shipping, any import duty and tax, packaging, plus an allowance for pieces that don't sell. Only then add your margin. Sellers who price from the Pakistani price tag are often surprised to find they are working for free.

Shipping per kilo usually drops as boxes get heavier, so consolidating one larger shipment instead of many small ones protects your margin. A lawn suit weighs roughly half a kilo, so a 20 kg box holds around 40 suits.

5. Plan around the Pakistani calendar

Your year has a rhythm:

  • February to April: new lawn launches. Pre-order early; the best prints sell out.
  • Six to eight weeks before Eid: your customers start shopping for Eid. Your stock needs to be with you by then.
  • The wedding season (in Pakistan, mainly winter; abroad, often the summer): formals and wedding guest outfits.
  • Summer and winter sales, Azadi sales in August, 11.11 and White Friday in November: good times to buy brand stock cheaper.

6. Sell where your customers already are

Most Pakistani clothing businesses abroad start on Instagram and WhatsApp, then add a simple website. Good photos on real people, honest descriptions of fabric and fit, and fast replies on WhatsApp matter more than a fancy shop. Pop-up stalls at community events and mela markets before Eid are still a great way to be found.

7. Check the legal basics

Register your business as your country requires, keep records, and check whether you need an import registration (in the UK, an EORI number for commercial imports) and how import duty and tax apply to your shipments. Rules differ by country and change, so check with your local authorities before your first big order.

How we help new sellers

Frequently asked questions

Is selling Pakistani clothes online profitable?

It can be, if you price for the full landed cost (purchase, stitching, shipping, duty and unsold stock), buy at the right time of year and keep returns low with good sizing. Margins are usually better on formals and made-to-order pieces than on everyday lawn.

How much money do I need to start a Pakistani clothing business?

You can start small with a sample order of a few pieces to test what sells, then reinvest. Many home sellers begin with a single shipment of 20 to 40 suits.

Do I need a shop to sell Pakistani suits?

No. Most new sellers start on Instagram, WhatsApp and community events, then add a website. A physical boutique comes later, if at all.

What sells best in a Pakistani boutique abroad?

Lawn in spring and summer, formals before Eid, and wedding wear in the wedding season. Ready-made outfits in a reliable size range sell well to younger customers who don't have a tailor.
