Pakistani Bridesmaid Dresses: How to Dress Your Bridal Party When Everyone Lives Abroad

· 3 min read

Planning Pakistani bridesmaid dresses for the dholki, mehndi, baraat and walima? How to choose outfits for each function, set a budget, collect measurements from friends in different countries and have everything stitched and shipped together.

Pakistani weddings don't really have "bridesmaids" in the Western sense, yet every bride has her girls: sisters, cousins and best friends who plan the dholki, dance at the mehndi and stay by her side until the rukhsati. More and more brides abroad want them dressed together, and more and more of those girls live in different cities and countries.

Here's how to plan Pakistani bridal party outfits, function by function, and how to get them made without a hundred WhatsApp messages.

Function by function

Dholki. Relaxed and fun. Simple printed or lightly embroidered suits, often in a shared colour. Many brides skip matching here.

Mayun. Traditionally yellow. Light cotton or lawn, with flowers rather than heavy jewellery. Easy to match: everyone in yellow, in any style.

Mehndi. The big one for the bridal party. Bright colours, outfits made for dancing: gharara, sharara or farshi shalwar. This is where most brides choose matching or coordinated outfits. See our ideas for mehndi outfits for the bride's sisters.

Nikkah and baraat. The bride's day to shine. Her party usually wears formal outfits in softer or complementary colours: anarkalis, long shirts with lehengas or front-open gowns.

Walima. Elegant and understated: pastels, organza and fine embroidery.

Most brides match their party for one or two functions, often the mehndi, and let everyone dress individually for the rest.

Matching, coordinating and budget

Before anyone shops, agree three things with your bridal party:

  1. Which functions you'll coordinate.
  2. The look: same outfit, same design in different colours, or same colours in different designs.
  3. The budget, and who pays. Some brides pay for the outfits as a gift; often each girl pays for her own. Be clear early: it avoids awkward conversations later.

Why stitched to measure works best for a bridal party

Ready-made Pakistani bridesmaid dresses come in standard sizes, and your bridal party doesn't. One friend is petite, another is tall, one is pregnant, and your cousin wants full sleeves. Stitching to measure from the same fabric means:

  • every outfit fits the person wearing it
  • the colours match exactly, because the fabric comes from one batch
  • each person can have small changes (sleeves, necklines, length) while the look stays the same

Collecting measurements without the chaos

The hardest part of dressing a bridal party is rarely the design: it's getting accurate measurements from eight people in four countries. A few rules:

  • Ask for measurements, not sizes. "Medium" means something different at every brand.
  • Send everyone the same guide. Our measuring guide explains each measurement simply.
  • Give a deadline, at least six weeks before the wedding.
  • Have someone measure them. Measurements taken by a friend are more accurate than self-measured ones.

Our group order is built for this. You describe the wedding and the look and get a private link. Share it on the bridal party's WhatsApp group; each person adds her own name, outfit and measurements, and the form flags numbers that look wrong (like centimetres typed as inches). You can see who has done it, and we see everything we need to stitch.

Shipping to everyone

All the outfits can ship in one box to the bride or the organiser, which is usually the cheapest option. If the bridal party is spread out, tell us on WhatsApp and we will quote shipping to each address, so you can compare.

Timing

Start at least 8 to 10 weeks before the wedding, and more for heavily embroidered outfits or the December wedding season. Agree designs first, then collect measurements, then order the fabric in one go.

Frequently asked questions

What do bridesmaids wear at a Pakistani wedding?

The bride's sisters and friends usually coordinate for the mehndi (bright colours, outfits made for dancing) and wear complementary formals for the nikkah, baraat and walima.

Can I order Pakistani bridesmaid dresses online in the UK?

Yes. UK boutiques sell ready-made outfits in standard sizes. To match colours exactly and fit everyone properly, many brides have them stitched to measure in Pakistan and shipped to the UK.

How far in advance should I order bridal party outfits?

At least 8 to 10 weeks before the wedding for a group, and earlier in the December wedding season or before Eid.

Who pays for bridesmaid outfits at a Pakistani wedding?

There's no fixed rule. Some brides gift the outfits; more often each person pays for her own. Agree it at the start.
